Your First Appointment: What To Expect

If you're thinking about seeking help from a psychiatrist for your mental health needs, you're showing a sign of strength. It can be hard to ask for help, and reaching out to a psychiatrist near you for support in addressing your mental health needs is a step towards healing. It's normal to feel nervous about your first appointment with a psychiatrist, and it may be helpful if you understand what to expect at your initial appointment.

By the time you reach my office you would have filled out several forms about your physical and mental health history.  Please be as open as possible on your forms because the more that we know about your history, the better we're able to meet your needs.  Please park your car behind the building at one of my reserved parking spots (sign will read  24 Hour Reserved Parking For Patients of Dr. Maaty Only).

Once you come in,  I'll go over your forms with you, asking questions for clarification so that I can understand your needs. Please remember, I'm here to help you - not judge you.  I always mention that if there are things that you are uncomfortable talking about, please let me know and I will respect your wishes.  I understand that it takes time to develop a relationship with me and to feel comfortable enough to share certain parts of your history.

As we talk through your history, I'll also ask you about what mental health treatments you've tried in the past. If this is your first time going through mental health treatment, I'll talk to you more about what you can expect during our time together. I'll ask you about your goals for treatment, so we can make sure that we're on the same page to improve your mental health.

At the end of your appointment, we'll schedule our next time to talk together. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to give you the help you need.
